Humphrey Carpenter (1946 - 2005) wrote the Authorised Biography of J.R.R. Tolkien published by Allen & Unwin in 1977, and helped edit The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, published in 1981. He died at the young age of 58 from heart failure.
