Hyarmendacil II, born with the name Vinyarion (T.A. 1391[1] - T.A. 1621[2]), was the twenty-fourth King of Gondor.[3]

Vinyarion ascended the throne after his father Aldamir was killed in a battle with the Harad and the Corsairs of Umbar in T.A. 1540.[4] Eleven years later, in T.A. 1551, he defeated the Men of the Harad[5] and took the name Hyarmendacil II.[2]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Vinyarion is a Quenya name. Its meaning is not glossed, but Paul Strack suggests that it means "New Son" and is a compound of vinya ("new") and the suffix ion ("son").[6]

Hyarmendacil is a Quenya name. It means "South-victor".[7] It is a compound of hyarmen ("south") and -(n)dacil ("victor").[8]

In a late manuscript of what would later become Appendix A, it is mentioned that Vinyarion took the name Hyarmendakil II in 1551 after a great victory over Harad in revenge for the death of his father Aldamir.[1]
