Idis was the name of Théoden's daughter within an early draft of The Lord of the Rings.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Idis first appeared alongside Éowyn assisting Théoden in Meduseld after Gandalf's triumph against Wormtongue. When Aragorn first saw Éowyn in daylight, she was described as being younger than Idis. Later, when Gandalf asks Théoden who will lead Rohan when they depart to war, Théoden chooses Éowyn, his niece, and not Idis, his daughter; despite Idis being present at that very moment. At the meal before Théoden and his Men depart to war, Idis is not mentioned as Éowyn alone brought wine to the meal. At the same meal, Háma tells Théoden that the House of Eorl would not die with Éomer, as Idis was Théoden's daughter and Éowyn was Éomer's sister. Háma then stated that "All love her. Let her be as lord to the Eorlingas, while we are gone", indicating Éowyn, and Éowyn alone, with Idis never appearing again.[2]

In a very early draft, Idis was originally named Ælflæd, which Christopher Tolkien notes was struck out soon after.[3]

Tolkien eventually discarded Idis when the story of Éowyn overshadowed her.[2]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Christopher Tolkien has noted that Idis is similar to the Old English poetic word ides ("woman, lady").[3]
