This is an attempt to list all published writings (including letters, transcribed interviews and statements, etc.) of J.R.R. Tolkien appearing in books, periodicals and ephemera, in chronological order of publication.[1] For a list of his major books, see the bibliography section on the J.R.R. Tolkien page. For known or rumoured unpublished material, see Index:Unpublished material.

  • Note 1: For ease of reference (and because many items do not have an exact date of publication), works are sorted alphabetically under each year
  • Note 2: The list does not (in general) include reprints
  • Note 3: Publications, with only a vague contribution by Tolkien, or which are questionable, disputed, or with an unknown publication status or similiar, are enclosed with parentheses
