hmm... As far as I know, there is no place name beginning with X; is there a particular policy about what we do with lists which don't include any contents for certain letters? If we remove X as a heading, then there will still be a link for X in contents at the top. Well, is this page really necessary? The page is sort of doomed to always be 'under construction'. If we think that a list of all place-names is necessary, then my suggestion would be to make a category for it instead (which would make the list automatic). This is what I have done with a private Mediawiki (which also includes all place-names from ICE MERP). --Morgan 22:04, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Well, I've already put hours of work into it. I'd be upset to just delete it now. I'm the supervisor for the Locations Project, so I thought I'd create this list; besides it also includes locations which people might not have thought of to create a page for - as is evident by the red links. That way we can have a nice index of locations, and we can gradually create an article for every single one (with categories there's no way of ticking of ones not previously created).-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  22:13, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Columns

If placing the entries manually into tables to simulate columns is becoming a hassle you might consider using the CSS3 column module. Advantages: it's automatic and preserves semantic markup. Disadvantages: it's not yet a standard and won't show up in Internet Explorer (IE users will just see an ordinary list). —Aulë the Smith ^(Tk·Cb) 14:30, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Ah! Sorry Aule the Smith, I've only just now seen your message. I've done all the work now, so it's not much of a hassle from now on. Indeed, IE always seems to be holding web technologies back a few years (although in the case of CSS3 the W3C aren't doing a bad job of it themselves). I wouldn't have suggested it except I recently saw it used very nicely on a major website - probably because it degrades well. How to Edit?

I have not been able to edit the List of Place Names, either at the whole-page level or at the individual letter level. It's not listed in the Protected Pages yet when I've tried to make an edit I get a white page that doesn't change and when I back out of it the change is not made.

If a contributor wishes to make a change should that person be allowed to do so, or should changes be submitted (presumably through this Talk page) for King Aragorn to make?

Here are a few changes I'd like to see:

• "Thistle Book" (red) - There is a "Thistle Brook" already in existence (since 2005); the name needs fixing.
• "Under-Gate" (blue) redirects to "Undergate", which exists and is the name given in The Return of the King. Should redirects be in this list? I think yes but not when they are misspellings or unlikely versions of a correct name. I think "Undergate" should be included since it's the correct name.
• In a reverse case, "Minrimmon" (red) awaits an article, but the correct "Min-Rimmon" already exists. The correct version is needed in the list.

There are 4 entries for the west entrance to Moria: "Doors of During (Hollin Gate)", "Hollin Gate (Doors of Druin, West-door)", "West-door (Hollin Gate)", and "West-gate of Moria (Doors of Durin)". The "West-door" is red while the other 3 are blue, and redirect to "Doors of Durin". Is there a policy for creating redirects for locations?

Should the List of Place Names include categories that contain places?

Yes, unfortunately we can no longer edit large articles like this. Hyarion is aware of it, I think he said that upgrading to the latest MediaWiki version might correct the bug. He plans to upgrade it soon. Also, I'd like to move this to Index:Place Names -- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  13:29, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
