Indis (Q, pron. [ˈindis]) was a Vanya, the second wife of Finwë.

Meeting of Finwë and Indis
She was probably the daughter of the sister of Ingwë, King of the Vanyar.
One day, Finwë arose and went forth from Tirion alone, and he passed through the Calacirya, and went towards the house of Ingwë upon the west slopes of Oiolossë.His coming was unheralded and unforeseen; and when Indis saw Finwë climbing the paths of the Mountain, and the light of Laurelin was behind him as a glory, without forethought she sang suddenly in great joy, and her voice went up as a song of the lirulin in the sky. Then Finwë heard that song falling from above, and he looked up and saw Indis in the golden light, and he knew in that moment that she loved him and had long done so. Then his heart turned at last to her; and he believed that this chance, as it seemed, had been granted for the comfort of them both.In one year from their meeting, in the year 1185, upon the Mountain Finwë, King of the Noldor, wedded Indis, sister of Ingwë; and Finwë loved her dearly, and was glad again; and she bore him four children; yet the shadow of Míriel did not depart from the House of Finwë, nor from his heart; and of all whom he loved Fëanor had ever the chief share of his thought. The Vanyar and the Noldor for the most part rejoiced, except Fëanor. Indis (Q, pron. [ˈindis]) was a Vanya, the second wife of Finwë.

History

She was probably the daughter of the sister of Ingwë, King of the Vanyar.[2]

After dying, Míriel Þerindë refused to be reinbodied or healed, leaving her husband Finwë in an unfair widowhood.

[Indis] had loved Finwë in her heart, ever since the days when the Vanyar and the Ñoldor lived close together. In one of his wanderings Finwë met her again upon the inner slopes of Oiolossë, [...] and her face was lit by the golden light of Laurelin that was shining in the plain of Ezellohar below. In that hour Finwë perceived in her eyes the love that had before been hidden from him. So it came to pass that Finwë and Indis desired to be wedded.[3]:334

With the Statute of Finwë and Míriel, Manwë allowed Finwë to take a second wife and Indis thus became the stepmother to Fëanor. With Indis, Finwë had two more sons, Fingolfin and Finarfin, and two daughters, Findis and Írimë. Fëanor observed the influence of Indis on Finwë, including his speech which started to resemble that of the Vanyar and considered it a disrespect against his mother.[3]:336

After the slaying of her husband, she, along with her eldest daughter Findis, returned to Valinor to live among her people, the Vanyar.

Etymology

Indis is Quenya for "Great or Valiant Woman",[2] but it is also glossed as "wife, bride".[4]
