John Benjamin Tolkien (1807-1896) was J.R.R. Tolkien's grandfather, being Arthur Tolkien's father. He was born in Middlesex, London. He was a piano maker, teacher, and tuner.

He had been married to Jane Holmwood with whom he had had four children: Emily (1838), Lousia (1840), John Benjamin (1845), and Jane, (1846).

Later he married Mary Jane Stow on February 16th, 1856 in All Saints Parish Church, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England and they had their first child, Arthur, the next year.

On the death of Arthur in 1896, John was so grieved and died six months later in Kings Norton, Warwickshire, England.
