Karen Lea Wynn Fonstad (April 18, 1945March 11, 2005) was the author of the popular Atlas of Middle-earth. In The Return of the Shadow, Christopher Tolkien credits Fonstad for noting a geographical inconsistency between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.[1]
