Karningul is the actual Westron name of Imladris.[1] It means Cloven Valley, a deeply-cut, steep sided valley.

Etymology

It's not easy to divide this word to its components, but obviously it's composed of *karnin and *gul or *karn and *ingul, meaning "cloven" and "valley" respectively.
