Lóni was a companion of Balin, who was part of the expedition to recover Khazad-dûm for Durin's folk in the late Third Age. For a time Balin and his Dwarves seemed to be successful, but in the end disaster struck. A new invasion of Orcs and other creatures of Sauron came against the Dwarves in Moria. Lóni was one of those who fought to hold the Second Hall (where the Fellowship later encountered the Balrog) and the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, and he died there alongside his companions Náli and Frár.
