Langon was a servant of Melko.
History
Langon's race and the meaning of his name are unknown, other than during the Elder Days he became a servant of Melko.
During the siege of Utumna by the Valar, Langon was with his Dark Lord in Utumna.
Then he was sent by Melko to negotiate with their enemies.[1]
Etymology
In The Grammar and Lexicon of the Gnomish Tongue[2] there are two entries:
- LANG - to blare, clang, ring
- LANGON - great bell
So perhaps the name has something to do with Langon "blaring forth" Melko's message.
Another interpretation comes later in The Etymologies with the following passages:
- LANK - Quenya lamba (throat), N lhame (the stem was first written LANG, with derivatives, Q langa, N lhang)[3]
- LAK - swallow, Q lambo (throat)[3]
