Letter 158
RecipientRayner Unwin
Date2 December 1954
Subject(s)Comment on the dust-jacket "blurb" of Houghton Mifflin's edition of The Two Towers

Letter 158 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

[edit] Summary

Tolkien said that Houghton Mifflin's The Two Towers blurb must have been written by someone who had not read the book, but relied on hearsay inaccurately remembered. "Giving away the plot" is silly and unnecessary; but at least the plot given away might be for the book described.
