RecipientNaomi Mitchison
Date29 June 1955
Subject(s)The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion

Letter 164 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

[edit] Summary

Tolkien complained of having more work that he could cope with, plus the work on Vol. III.[note 1] He was feeling as flat as a burst tire but might revive if the final proofs of Vol. III arrived. He had heard from booksellers that since there had been so long a delay the proper time for publication was in late September.

Tolkien thought that Allen and Unwin might now publish the "earlier history".[note 2] He believed that they were willing to envision a book about as long as Vol. I.[note 3]

[edit] Notes

  1. The Return of the King
  2. The Silmarillion
  3. The Fellowship of the Ring
