RecipientAllen and Unwin
Date12 December 1955
Subject(s)Inspiration for the Shire

Letter 178 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

[edit] Summary

Tolkien described his inspiration for the Shire; that of a Warwickshire village around the time of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria (1897). Many reviewers had likened it to North Oxford - mainly based on Tolkien's professorship - but Tolkien found that region depressing and characterless.
