Letter 185 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Summary

This is a fragment of a letter, dated March 19, 1956, sent to Priscilla Tolkien. He comments on Letter 184, from Sam Gamgee, from Tooting! He then tells that though Tooting might sound hobbit-like, it is very un-Shirelike.

The last fragment of the letter comments on Allen & Unwin's prognosis for book sales, extremely good news.

Notes

In J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography, pages 224-225, the event of Letter 184 is also mentioned. It is followed by: "[l]ater he said: 'For some time I lived in fear of receiving a letter signed S. Gollum. That would have been more difficult to deal with." It is likely that this passage is from this fragment.
