In this fragment of a letter dated 1 February 1938 Tolkien asks if Stanley Unwin's young son Rayner would care to read a typed version of A Long Expected Party, the first chapter of what would become The Lord of the Rings. Rayner is, he remarks, a "a very reliable critic".
