Letter 283 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

This letter, dated January 7, 1966, is sent to a reader named Benjamin P. Indick. Indick had sent Tolkien a long letter with comments. Tolkien tells him he deserved a much longer answer, but he is pressed for time; in fact, if Tolkien wanted to produce more stories, like Indick asked, it would mean Tolkien could not answer fan letters at all.
