Letter 292 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Summary

A "fan" was going to write a "sequel", and sent Tolkien details. Tolkien sent the material to Joy Hill of Allen & Unwin, and asks her of the legal position. He asks for a formal letter from the publisher to dissuade the writer, fearing a publisher might publish "such tripe". He explains that when he personally rejected an earlier fan-proposed sequel the young writer wrote a harsh rant back.
