The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien
Letter 44
RecipientMichael Tolkien
Date18 March 1941
Subject(s)Mabel Suffield, Catholicism

Letter 44 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

[edit] Summary

Tolkien told Michael of his mother's family, who were from Worcestershire. Mabel - to whom Michael owed much - was beautiful and full of wit, but died too soon for her age (38 years old), due to disease and religious persecution.

[edit] Notes

Mabel Suffield and her sister were more or less erased from Suffield family history for converting to Catholicism. Tolkien considered this a grave misdeed against his mother. He would write of it again in letters 142, 250 and 267.
