Letter 86 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

This is a fragment of a letter, dated October 23, 1944, written to Christopher Tolkien. Tolkien expresses that he is bored and tired, and then starts to discuss the topic "blasphemy". He does not mind blasphemy against God, and cites Luke 23:34. The Lord would not be pained by linguistic blasphemy (cursing), no matter how "wearisome, saddening and maddening" it is. Far worse would the Lord be pained by the offenses humans commit against one another.
