The inscribed copy of the Japanese Hobbit.

Father Hugh Maycock 14 December 1966 refers to a note by J.R.R. Tolkien to Father Hugh Maycock, written on 14 December 1966.[1]

  • Description: Tolkien inscribed a copy of the Japanese Hobbit: "With best wishes | to Fr Hugh Maycock | and Pusey House | Dec. 14. 1966" (on reverse of endpaper).[note 1] Tolkien loosely inserted in the book a brief note to Maycock, apologising for the delay "in performing my promise" and now sending "a copy of the Japanese 'Hobbit' with best wishes including Christmas blessings".[2]

Notes

  1. Rev. Francis Hugh Maycock (1903-1980) was Principal at Pusey House from 1952 until 1970.
