Bülles has collaborated with Professor Michael D.C. Drout in research on J.R.R. Tolkien, assisted in the preparation of the academic yearbook Tolkien Studies, and contributed a few articles for the J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia.
He is the founding chairman of the German Tolkien Society (1997) and has been the European Representative of the Tolkien Society, UK.
