Mark T. Hooker is a visiting scholar at Indiana University's Russian and East European Institute (REEI). Retired, he conducts research for publication.

Hooker is credited with coining the terms Tolkiennymy (to describe the study of Tolkien's use of names and etymologies from existing languages) and borrowing the Russian word Samizdat (to describe self-published "pirate" translations).
