Max Schuchart

Max Schuchart, MBE (August 16, 1920 - February 25, 2005) was a Dutch poet, journalist and translator. He translated many other English authors, such as Oscar Wilde, Terry Goodkind, Richard Adams, Daniel Defoe and Salman Rushdie. Schuchart was the first to translate The Lord of the Rings (in 1956-1957), and the second to translate The Hobbit. He wrote a book about his experiences called Tolkien: In de Ban van zijn Werk.

Schuchart revised his translation in 1996, and this was published the subsequent year.
