MUD is defined as a multi-user domain, multi-user dungeon, or multi-user dimension. All of these refer to the same idea, an online environment where a multitude of people may be logged on and interact with one another. The original defintion for MUD was multi-user dungeon, indicating the multiplayer aspect applied to popular single player games like Dungeon and Zork. While not always the case, the vast majority of MUDs are built for the sole purpose of gaming. MUDs can be considered the predecessors of the MMORPG.
