Nessa was an Ainu and a Valië. She was the wife of Tulkas (Strong Champion of the Valar) and the sister of Oromë (Huntsman of the Valar). In the "due order" in which the queens of the Valar were named, Nessa was named last.[1]
History
Nessa was lithe and swift of foot and she loved fast moving creatures such as deer. Outrunning them with great speed with the wind in her hair. Nessa wedded Tulkas during the Spring of Arda and she was known as Nessa the Swift.[2]
Before the destruction of the Isle of Almaren, the first dwelling of the Valar, Nessa delighted in dancing and would often dance on the great green grass of Almaren.[2] Henceforth, as the Valar had finished with their labours in the creation of Arda, King Manwë of the Valar ordained a great feast on Almaren. And so the Valar were gathered upon Almaren during the Spring of Arda fearing no evil; and also, because of the light of the great Lamp Illuin, they did not perceive the shadow in the far north that was cast afar by Melkor for he had grown dark as the Night of the Void. What's more, it was sung that on this great feast that took place in Almaren, Nessa wedded Tulkas there at that time where Nessa's sister-in-law Vána the Ever-young, wife of Oromë, robed Nessa with her flowers.Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag[3]
The Noldorin names of Nessa were Neth (a cognate of the Quenya/Qenya word) or Dineth, a Noldorin word meaning "bride", related to the Quenya word indis.[4]
In a later text, Pengolodh notes that Nessa's name is "not elvish" and probably represents a Valarin title, much like the name of her spouse, adopted in Quenya, but there is no record.[5]

Other versions of the legendarium
In The Book of Lost Tales, Nessa was one of the Valarindi, daughter of Orome and Yavanna. Her son with Tulkas was Telimektar.
Nessa was seen at the House of Tulkas bringing goblets of wine and drinks to his champions.[6]
Early etymology
Her names were Helinyetille meaning "Eyes of Heartsease", from helin ("violet, pansy"), and Melesta, from mele ("to love").[7]
