[[Niënor]] ran all day without rest, like a scared animal, and all her clothes teared apart in the way. But at dusk, she suddenly felt asleep. When she woke up in the morning, all things seemed new for her, like a speechless child, amazed and fearful of the world. She wandered arround the woods until the night falled, and she lay down in a green mound, but she could not sleep, as a lightning storm scared her, and remained there still and naked under the rain.

Synopsis

"Niënor in Brethil" by Alan Lee

Niënor ran all day without rest, like a scared animal, and all her clothes teared apart in the way.

That night a group of Men of Brethil approached there, and with them was Turambar, and they could see Niënor lying in Haudh-en-Elleth. Turambar was astonished, but he wrapped her up with his coat and carried her into their refuge. There they tried to ask that mysterious woman who she was, which made her get nervous and cry. However, both Turambar and the woman became confident with each other, and he named her Níniel, the "Lady of Tears", and she accept it repeating the name.

Next morning the group headed to Ephel Brandir. In the way they crossed the bridge of Dimrost, and when Níniel saw the waters from the bridge, she started shivering uncontrollably, and since that day the name of the waterfall was changed to Nen Girith, the "Shuddering Water". Níniel was already ill before they arrived to Ephel Brandir, and Brandir took care of her with the help of many women. However, she only seemed calm when Turambar was with her.

Once Níniel recovered health, they had to teach her to speak like a little child, and she loved to know new words and used to go to Brandir's house to ask him about the name of things, as he was very wise. Thus Brandir began to love her, but she her heart was for Turambar, and she was only happy with him.

One year passed, and there was peace in Brethil thanks to the fear that Orcs had to the Men of Brethil. Níniel was completely recovered, strong and beautiful, and Turambar couldn't wait and asked for her hand in marriage, and she was happy with this. But when Brandir heared about, he warned her and told her that Turambar was indeed Túrin of the House of Hador, who was always chased by war and misfortune. Therefore Níniel decided to wait, and only accepted the next spring, when Turambar promised her that he only will go to war to defend her and their people.
