A Long-expected Party

Odo Proudfoot (S.R. 1304 - S.R. 1406[1]) was a Hobbit of the Shire.

History

Odo was the son of Bilbo Baggins' aunt, Linda, who married Odo's father Bodo[1] and gave rise to a line of Proudfoots (or, as Odo himself preferred, "Proudfeet"). Odo was among the guests at the famous Bilbo's Farewell Party at which Bilbo Baggins disappeared.[2] At that time, he was an elderly hobbit indeed, being ninety-seven years old. He only lived for a few more years after the Party,[1] but from him had come at least two generations of descendants, including his mischievous grandson Sancho, who attempted to excavate for treasure in Bag End.[2]

Etymology

The name Odo was meaningless in contemporary Hobbitish Westron. It represented an original name Oda.[3]

Portrayal in Adaptations

1978: The Lord of the Rings (1978 film):

Odo angrily wiggles his toes as he corrects Bilbo.

1981: The Lord of the Rings (1981 radio series):

Odo is portrayed by Sean Arnold.

2001: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring:
