Among the descendants of [[House of Hador]] in [[Númenor]] was one [[Hatholdir]], a close friend of [[Tar-Meneldur]] the fifth King. Hatholdir's son was Orchaldor, who married [[Meneldur]]'s elder daughter [[Ailinel]], making Orchaldor the brother-in-law of Meneldur's Heir [[Aldarion]]. Orchaldor and Ailinel had a son, [[Soronto]], who seems to have played some part in the history of Aldarion's Kingship, though the details of his actions are nowhere recorded.

Orchaldor, the son of Hatholdir, was descended from the House of Hador. He was a close friend of Tar-Meneldur and married his elder daughter, Ailinel. The son of Orchaldor and Ailinel was Soronto, who desired the kingship. When Tar-Aldarion created a new Law of Succession in Númenor, which allowed his daughter Ancalimë to receive the Sceptre, the possibility existed that if she refused to rule, died childless, or remained unwed beyond a certain time limit, then Soronto would have become King. As it happened, none of these possibilities came to pass and Tar-Ancalimë served as Númenor's first Ruling Queen.[1]

Etymology

Orchaldor's name is Sindarin and appears to mean "Eminent Man" (from the word orchal, 'superior', and the masculine suffix -dor).
