Ornendil was the older[2] son of King Eldacar of Gondor.[3]

History[edit | edit source]

In T.A. 1432 Ornendil's grandfather, King Valacar died and the civil war of the Kin-strife began[4], because some of the Dúnedain, especially in the southern provinces refused to accept Eldacar as their new king, who had been born in an alien country and whose mother Vidumavi was perceived by them to be of a lesser race and alien race. Castamir the Usurper, one of the leaders of the rebels against his father Eldacar, besieged Osgiliath, which Eldacar held for a long time.[3] In T.A. 1437[5] the forces of Castamir took and burnt Osgiliath. Though Eldacar managed to escape to his kinfolk in Rhovanion, Ornendil was captured, and put to death by Castamir.[3] Ten years later, in T.A. 1447,[6] Eldacar managed to avenge his son's death by killing Castamir in the Battle of the Crossings of Erui.[3]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Ornendil is a Quenya name. It means "Lover of Trees".[7] It is a compound of orne ("tree") and -(n)dil ("lover", "friend").[8]

Other verions of the legendarium[edit | edit source]

A late manuscript of what would later become Appendix A mentions that Ornendil was killed in T.A. 1446 and that his brother Aldamir was the third child of Eldacar, which implies that Ornendil also had a sister.[1]
