Paladin married Eglantine Banks, and they had four children together, three daughters and a son. The eldest was Pearl (born 1375) followed by Pimpernel (1379) and Pervinca (1385). Their youngest child was a boy named Peregrin (1390), often called "Pippin", who was a kinsman of Frodo Baggins and Merry and became one of the nine members of the famous Fellowship of the Ring. In time, he also became the thirty-second Thain of the Shire.

Becoming Thain
Paladin was not expected to become Thain as the Thainship had passed to the descendants of the Old Took's second son, Isumbras IV. Isumbras's grandson - the Old Took's great-grandson - Ferumbras III died without an heir in 1415, so the Thainship passed to his nearest male-line relative, who was the grandson of the Old Took's third son (Hildigrim). As such, the Thainship passed to Ferumbras's second cousin, Paladin, who became Thain Paladin II, the thirty-first Thain of the Shire and nineteenth of the Took line.

Unusually, it appears that Paladin continued the lifestyle of a farmer despite becoming Thain as Pippin tells Bergil that he farms the lands around Whitwell. Unfortunately, Whitwell is not labelled on the map of the Shire, but it is known to be near Tuckborough in the Green Hills. It is unknown whether Paladin lived in Great Smials or Whitwell.

Paladin Took II was born in S.R. 1333 being the only son, and fourth child, of Adalgrim Took, and a great-grandchild of the Old Took. He was the father of Peregrin Took and he became the thirty-first Thain of the Shire in 1415.

History

Family

During the War of the Ring

Paladin never agreed with Lotho Sackville-Baggins' attempt to takeover the Shire as he believed that if anyone were going to the chief it should be the legitimate Thain of the Shire, therefore Paladin and the other Tooks stood up to Lotho and the ruffians. The Tooks could hide in their deep dwellings of Great Smials so the ruffians couldn't get them, and if any ruffians were found in the Tookland they were shot and killed, an act which led the ruffians to become harsher.

When the four hobbits - or, "the Travellers" - returned to find all the changes in the Shire, they immediatedly went about bringing a rebellion against Sharkey and the ruffians. Pippin went off to Great Smials to raise the Tooks, and whilst some Tooks - including Paladin - killed ruffians and chased the rest off south, Pippin brought a hundred hobbits back to Bywater with him. Those hundred hobbits were important in ensuring the victory over the ruffians at the Battle of Bywater despite Paladin's absence from the battle.

Death

Paladin died in 1434 at the age of 101, and after having been Thain for nineteen years, he was succeeded by his son who became Thain Peregrin I.

Etymology

A "paladin"[1] is a high office which existed in medieval Europe - which entered into many tales - and was noble office held by a honourable and valiant knight. In particular, a paladin was one of the twelve peers of Charlemagne's court. The term comes from the Latin palatinus which means "of the palace".
