The Quest of the Ring was the quest taken by the members of the Fellowship of the Ring to destroy the One Ring of Sauron to rid the evil in Middle-earth during the Third Age.
Formation of the Quest
The quest was approved of during the Council of Elrond, Elrond appointed nine members to accompany the ring-bearer, Frodo on his difficult journey: Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Sam, Merry and Pippin (Merry and Pippin were not chosen, but went on their own consent) After a couple months stay in Rivendell, the Company set off on the arduous journey that lay ahead.
They begin by heading south into Hollin, and then attempting to cross the Misty Mountains by means of Caradhras. Stopped by snow, they turn around and pass into Moria. There they see the Tomb of Balin, much to the grief of Gimli. Not long after, on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, the Company meets the Balrog, forcing them to depart from Gandalf.
The remaining eight members of the Fellowship, now led by Aragorn, continued on to Lothlórien. There they were greeted by Haldir and his brothers, and brought to Caras Galadhon. They stayed there for about a month, through the hospitality of Celeborn and Galadriel.
From Lórien the Company took boats given to them by the Galadhrim, along with other valuable items, down the rivers Nimrodel, and Anduin until they reached the Emyn Muil. Here the Fellowship was divided, and Boromir slain.
Frodo and Sam crossed the river to the east and, after much toil, escaped the hills. With the help of Sméagol, they crossed the Dead Marshes, and came in sight of the Black Gate. There they turned aside, and headed south for the Morgul Vale. Sméagol then led them to the path of Cirith Ungol, and Frodo is captured by orcs and taken to the Tower of Cirith Ungol.
