#REDIRECT War of the Ring

On March 10th, Dol Guldur sent forth it's troops to attack nearby Lorien  and Thranduil's halls to the far North of the great wood.  The First to be attacked was Lorien on March 11th, but the attacked failed and many of  the Orcs passed around Lorien and entered The Wold of Rohan, but they were met by the Ents of Fangorn Forest led by Treebeard and they were decimated and those who survived were drove into the Anduin river.
The second assault came on March 15th, but was unsuccessful as well.  But more importantly king Thranduil was attacked by the Northern assault force from Dol Guldur and "there was long battle under the trees and great ruin of fire; but in the end Thranduil had the victory".  Thranduil then lead his forces to the South to attack Dol Guldur itself.
The third and final assault on Lorien came on March 22nd and and it too failed.  But grevious damage was done to the borders of Lorien, but when the "shadow" had passed, Celeborn lead his host across the Anduin in many boats.  And on March 30th Dol guldur was attacked, "and Galadriel threw down the gates and laid bare its pits, and the forest was cleansed".
With Dol Guldur defeated and the cleansing of the wood, Sauron's empire in the North was destroyed.  So the forest was renamed Eryn Lasgalen (Wood of Greenleaves), and devided up.  Thranduil took all the land North of the Mountains of Mirkwood, Celeborn took the wooded land South of the East Bight calling it East Lorien, and the land inbetween was given to the Beornings and Woodmen.
If it were not for the valor of the Elves of Lorien and Mirkwood, "think of what might have been" (as Gandalf said) "savage swords in Eriador ... Night in Rivendell".
