sar is a noun meaning "stone" in Quenya. It can also act as a prefix, as in sard-. Compare with sarn in Sindarin.
In later versions of the Legendarium, it appears that Tolkien changed the Quenya stem to sarn-.
Sar is unusual in Quenya for being a proper one-syllable noun whose vowel is not compensatorily lengthened in the nominative case.
Example:
- Aragorn II = "Elf-stone"
