Months in the Shire Calendar |
---|
Solmath was the second month of the Shire Calendar. Approximately equivalent to modern February, it in fact ran from our 22 January to 20 February.[1]
Etymology
The name represents a modernization of the Old English name for February, Solmónaþ, meaning "mud-month" (cf. soil).[2][3]
In colloquial hobbitish, the month was pronounced, and sometimes spelled, Somath.[1]
