In all the histories and geographies of the island of [[Númenor]], only two mountains are named. The first was the famous [[Meneltarma]], the [[Pillar of Heaven]] that stood in the central highlands. The other was far to the north, near the island's [[North Cape]], with its eastern flanks forming sheer sea-cliffs. That was Sorontil, the peak of the [[Forostar]].

Sorontil is a mountain of Númenor (actually the only known besides Meneltarma) standing near the island's North Cape of Forostar, with its eastern flanks forming sheer sea-cliffs.[1]

Tar-Meneldur built a tall tower in the vicinity of this mountain.[2]

Etymology

Sorontil is not given a translation in the sources, but an apparent analysis would be soron + -til, thus meaning "Eagle peak". The translation would suggest that its craggy peaks were possibly populated by Eagles.[3]
