Spirits of shadows were servants of Morgoth whom he sent against Tilion and the vessel of the Moon. There was a strife in Ilmen, but Tilion was victorious against them.[1]

In the Silmarillion nothing else is told about the spirits of shadows, but they probably belonged to the Maiar who were "drawn to his splendour in the days of his greatness", and who followed him "down into his darkness".[2]
