Stella Marie Mills (1903-1989)[1] was a student of J.R.R. Tolkien and E.V. Gordon at the University of Leeds. Tolkien offered her assistance in becoming employed by the Oxford English Dictionary. In 1933, Mills published The Saga of Hrolf Kraki, a translation of the Old Norse Hrólfs saga kraka, which she dedicated to E.V. Gordon, Tolkien, and C.T. Onions.[2]
Mills would become a good friend of the Tolkien family, and Priscilla Tolkien recorded her reminiscences of Mills in a Foreword published in the 2012 edition of The Saga of Hrolf Kraki.[1] She was among the recipients to whom Tolkien sent inscribed editions of the newly published The Hobbit, on or close after 21 September 1937.[3]
