Stephen Raw (born 1952) is a British artist who drew the seven maps for the revised version of The Lord of the Rings published in 1994, and used in all subsequent English editions. Raw was commissioned by the publishers HarperCollins and worked under the tutilage of Christopher Tolkien (who had drawn the originals for his father, J.R.R. Tolkien).
Christopher Tolkien wrote "A Note on the Maps" (page 1140 of the one-volume edition) in which he gives an explanation of the background to the maps.[1] Raw also keeps an extensive archive of letters and faxes from Christopher while they worked on the maps for The Lord of the Rings.[2]
