Proposal for changing the infobox picture...

Oh hey wow, it's a thing. Sorry, I had no idea what a 'talk page' was, so I asked on the forums, which was probably the wrong place. Okay, so the Eöl page has been re-written, is it okay now or does it need more stuff changed to get off the To-do list? Elf-esteem 19:43, 29 November 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Eol's "Kingdom"[edit source]

I've read the Silmarillion regarding Eol's story and if I'm correct it seems he lives alone in Nan Elmoth until he ensnares Aredhel and produce a son, Maeglin. There are no references to him having Sindar subjects in his kingdom. Am I right?--173.60.51.236 08:08, 14 January 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

In that text, it does state that he has a few quiet servants, and they were no doubt Sindar people. He's not a King to have a kingdom; he's a subject of Thingol (even if he begrudged it). He has his own land and household outside the Girdle of Melian by the leave of King Thingol. --Elf-esteem 00:34, 15 January 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sinda?[edit source]

If it is said in the article that Eol was originally one of those Teleri who refused to cross the Hithaeglir, then he must be a Nando, not a Sinda. Should his infobox be changed accordingly? -- Ar-Zigûr (talk) 07:34, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You raise an interesting point. But in the chapter 'Of Maeglin' in The Silmarillion, it is said: "Lord,' he cried, 'the Guard have taken captive one that came by stealth to the Dark Gate. Eöl he names himself, and he is a tall Elf, dark and grim, of the kindred of the Sindar; yet he claims the Lady Aredhel as his wife, and demands to be brought before you. His wrath is great and he is hard to restrain; but we have not slain him as your law commands.'" - IvarTheBoneless (talk) 08:54, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Then it can be reconciled that since Eol crossed the Hithaeglir and, beside that, was a kinsman of Thingol, thus he became one of the Sindar. All right, let's keep things as they were. -- Ar-Zigûr (talk) 09:34, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
But...couldn't that also be said about the likes of Saeros, Ithilbor and Denethor? - IvarTheBoneless (talk) 10:38, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, it is unknown that they were also Thingol's kinsmen. So they don't count. -- Ar-Zigûr (talk) 11:10, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also, I've seen that you used the 'YS' abbreviation instead of 'FA' in your edit to Eol's page - shouldn't we wait for a broader consensus first before making such changes (even though I agree with you on the matter). And BTW, where did your figure of 'c. YT 1115' in Eol's infobox come from? - IvarTheBoneless (talk) 10:42, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have an idea that if a character was born during YT, but died/sailed west during the last six centuries of the First Age, then his/her lifetime would be marked as 'Y.T. ???? - Y.S. ???', but if their lifetime was entirely within the Years of the Sun, then it would be marked as 'F.A. ??? - ???'.
Concerning 'Y.S. 1115' date, it is mentioned in Maeglin text that Eol was one of the Teleri who refused to cross the Hithaeglir, but later he and a few others had crossed the mountains and come to Beleriand. Teleri refused to cross the Hithaeglir in Y.T. 1115, and thus the Second Sundering occured, when the Nandor became divided from the Teleri. -- Ar-Zigûr (talk) 11:10, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
