How to cite no.s from Pictures?
I don’t think the numbered items from J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien (ed.), Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien can be referred to with the general descriptor ‘drawing’. Each number indicates a full page of art, sometimes a drawing, sometimes a painting, somtimes calligraphy; sometimes an illustration, sometimes not; sometimes composed of several individual drawings or other items, sometimes accompanied by a (smaller) b/w version on the opposite page. My feeling is that ‘plate’ is the most appropriate general descriptor of these items, but I cannot find it being used in either the book itself, nor in Artist&Illustrator, nor in the Hammond/Anderson Bibliography. The other option that I think would be appropriate is to simply use ‘no.’ as the descriptor itself, and refrain from adding anything else, and that’s what Hammond and Scull have done in Artist&Illustrator. So I’ve removed ‘drawing’ from the reference here and left it at that. — Mithrennaith 01:01, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
