Servants and helpers?

As the sprites and fays are not mentioned in later versions of the legendarium, it might be that Tolkien envisioned these creatures as the "servants and helpers" of the Maiar (mentioned in later versions of Elven chronicles). – as my mother tongue is not English, im not sure at all about the meaning of the sentence on which this notion is based, namely Valaquenta These are the Maiar, the people of the Valar, and their servants and helpers. Does Tolkien really (and unequivocally) want to say that there were servants and helpers of the Maiar? Or could this be understood that the Maiar were servants and helpers of the Valar? --Tik 10:22, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
