Tar-Vanimeldë was the daughter of Tar-Telemmaitë and the sixteenth Ruler of Númenor; the third and last Ruling Queen.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Tar-Vanimeldë gave little thought to the practicalities of government, preferring music and dancing. The day-to-day affairs of state she left to her husband Herucalmo, who was of noble descent himself (of the same degree from Tar-Atanamir), and who effectively ruled Númenor while his wife held the Sceptre.[1]

When she died, her son Alcarin should have taken up the Sceptre, but Herucalmo refused to give up his power. Instead, though he had no legal claim to the throne, he took the name Tar-Anducal and ruled as King for the next twenty years. After Herucalmo's death, the kingship passed back to its rightful heir, his son, who became Tar-Alcarin.[1]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Vanimeldë is a Quenya name. Its meaning is not glossed, but Paul Strack suggests that it may mean "elven-fair" as a feminised form of vanimelda ("beautiful and beloved", "elven-fair").[3] Like all the rulers of Númenor who took their royal names in Quenya, Vanimeldë added the prefix tar- ("high") to her name when she received the Sceptre.[4]
