The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy on Blu-ray is set for release in the near future. The retail price is currently $99.99, with Amazon and other retail stores discounting down to $69.99. The film quality is expected to be even higher than the HD broadcasts on TNT.

Controversy
Fans of the films have voiced their frustration at New Line Cinema for not releasing the Extended Editions at the same time. The current Amazon.com reviews for the Blu-ray edition rate it an average of 2 out of 5 stars.
No announcement of a release date has been made regarding the Extended Edition on Blu-ray, but it is estimated for to be 2010.
