The Roll was a list made and learned by heart by Shire-historians. The Roll contained the names of all those Hobbits who fought in the Battle of Bywater. In all accounts of the Roll, Captains Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took always appear to be listed first at the top of the list. Some of the other Hobbits on the list include the likes of Samwise Gamgee, Farmer Cotton, Young Tom, Jolly and Nick Cotton.
In latter years, the rise of fame and fortune of the Cottons dates from this time.[1]
