Tom was one of the three Trolls (with Bert and William) that captured Bilbo Baggins and the Dwarves on their eastward journey. When Bert and William got into a row, Tom whacked them both with a branch to bring them to their senses, but that only made them angrier. Tricked by Gandalf, he was turned to stone by the light of the Sun.[1]
