UR is an Elvish root meaning "warmth", "be hot" (compare root AS).[1][2]

- Sindarin: aur ("sunlight, day")
Other versions of the legendarium[edit | edit source]
In the Etymologies, the meaning of root UR as "be hot" was changed to meaning "wide, large, great", with the derivatives Quenya úra ("large"), Úrien, and Noldorin ûr ("wide").[2][3]
In the Qenya Lexicon appears the root URU, with the Qenya derivative ūrin ("blazing hot").[4]
