This article is about the Quenya word. For the the Haven south of Gondor, see Umbar.

umbar is a noun meaning "fate" in Quenya.[1]

Umbar is also the name in Quenya of the sixth letter of the Tengwar alphabet.[1] It is the second letter of the second grade or Tyellë, which contains "voiced stops" and it is the second letter in the labial or p-series of consonants, the Parmatéma.[2] In the standard spelling of Quenya Umbar represents MB.[3] In all other modes this letter represents B.[2] The Westron name for this letter is .[4]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The word ambar ("doom") may be a variant. The word derives from the Primitive Quendian Root MBARAT[5] It is also possible that umbar contains the prefix u- (u + ambar), meaning that it has mainly negative and dark connotations compared to plain ambar, like Úmarth.
