Umbar (word)

umbar is a noun meaning "fate" in Quenya.

Etymology

The word ambar ("doom") may be a variant. It's also possible that umbar contains the prefix u- (u + ambar), meaning that it has mainly negative and dark connotations compared to plain ambar, like Úmarth.

Notes

The Haven of Umbar is a Mannish name of unknown meaning and origin, and despite the coincidental similarity, it is not related to Quenya.

Tengwa

Umbar is also the name of the sixth letter of the Tengwar alphabet and has the value of mb. In the Mode of Beleriand and other Sindarin and Westron modes it had the value of b. In Westron it was called Bí.
