ungwë is a noun meaning "spider's web" in Quenya.[1]

Ungwë is also the name in Quenya of the eighth letter of the Tengwar alphabet.[1] It is the fourth letter of the second grade or Tyellë, which contains "voiced stops" and it is the first letter in the fourth series of consonants. For written Quenya or Sindarin, the fourth series is used for the labialized or kw-series, the Quessetéma.[2] In the standard spelling of Quenya, Ungwërepresents NGW[3] while in Sindarin this letter represents GW. In Westron the fourth series is used for the k-series, the Calmatéma, and this letter represents G.[2] The Westron name for this letter is .[4]

Etymology

The word derives from the Primitive Quendian root UÑG.[5]
